Introducing SHAIDSHAID is a small local charity, established in 1993 as a response to youth homelessness in Derwentside. We work with young people who are ‘socially excluded’. e.g. homeless, care-leavers, victims of abuse, unemployed or those not engaged in education. Due to their youth and previous experiences the young people we deal with lack the personal and social skills neccessary to get on in life. Low self-esteem, lack of self confi dence and feelings of isolation and loneliness are common problems. Many lead chaotic and transient life-styles and often have health and emotional problems. SHAID works pro-actively with young people and communities to raise awareness of youth homelessness and leaving home issues. SHAID provides a range of housing advice, support and related services to help young people make the diffi cult transition to living independently in the community. This includes advice advocacy around housing, benefi ts, budgeting, training, employment and developing life skills. In terms of personal development, support is emotional, including listening, befriending and informal counselling. The emphasis is very much on empowering young people to take control of their lives, thereby giving them the best chance of managing their own home and reducing the risk of homelessness in the long term.
